Strychnine Use in Saskatchewan

Strychnine is regulated in Saskatchewan under the Strychnine Stewardship Program, which permits its targeted use for controlling Richardson’s ground squirrels (RGS) when significant or imminent economic damage is occurring in eligible areas.

The use of strychnine is strictly prohibited in residential, public, or publicly accessible areas. The program emphasizes responsible application by prioritizing environmental protection, including safeguarding species at risk and other non-target wildlife.

In addition, the program promotes user accountability and the adoption of integrated pest management (IPM) practices. All use must comply with the requirements of the current Emergency Use Registration (EUR), which is valid until November 1, 2027.

 Distributing RM

The RM of Edenwold has applied to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture to participate as a distributing municipality under the Strychnine Stewardship Program, as it is located within Emergency Response Zone 2B.

 Mandatory Requirement for Producers

As part of the Strychnine Stewardship Program, all producers are required to complete mandatory online training before participating in the use of strychnine. This training is designed specifically for producers and outlines proper use, safety requirements, environmental protection measures, and program responsibilities.

All Producers must also:

- Provide proof of Strychnine Stewardship Training
- Sign a Treatment Plan and Declaration Form
- Commit to follow all label restrictions, adhere to all requirements
- Participate in field audits when requested.
- Completed Species at Risk (SAR) Assessment

Producers are encouraged to complete the required training in advance, as training is available now. Doing so will ensure you are prepared once the product becomes available for distribution.

Please note:
Producers must complete the producer-specific training module

Completing the correct training ensures compliance with program requirements and promotes safe, responsible use.  Link to SARM's Training Website

 Strychnine Availability

The RM of Edenwold has placed its order for strychnine under the Strychnine Stewardship Program. Product availability is expected no earlier than late July, subject to provincial distribution timelines.

Cost estimates for producers are currently under review and will be determined by Council in the near future.

Residents and producers will be notified once the product is available and distribution details, including pricing, have been confirmed.

 Reporting Requirements

Producers participating in the Strychnine Stewardship Program will be required to follow all provincial reporting requirements related to product use.

Detailed reporting procedures and requirements will be provided by the RM of Edenwold once product distribution begins.

In the meantime, participants should be aware that accurate record-keeping and reporting are essential components of the program and are necessary to ensure compliance with provincial regulations.
