Hay Salvage & Ditch Mowing
Provincial Hay Salvage and Ditch Mowing Schedule
- RM residents and farmers can take advantage of free hay in Provincial Highway ditches. Please adhere to the following dates:
- Until July 8: Landowners or lessees nearest to highway ditches have the first option to cut or bale hay. Hay must be cut uniformly, bales placed at least 8 meters from the highway shoulder, and removed by August 8. The Ministry may remove unsafe bales. Contact the local Ministry of Highways Office to avoid disputes.
-
Until July 15: Early ditch mowing program. Contractors mow a 4-meter shoulder cut along Highways 1, 7, 11, 16, 39, and portions of Highways 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, and 10. Some intersections and facilities may receive a full ditch cut for visibility.
-
July 9 to August 8: Anyone can cut and bale hay without permission from adjacent landowners, provided no salvage operations have begun. Bales must be removed by August 8.
-
July 15 to October 15: Regular ditch mowing. Contractors mow the width of ditches along all four-lane highways. Heavily traveled two-lane highways receive a 12-meter cut, secondary highways an 8-meter cut, and all other highways a 4-meter cut for visibility and weed control.
-
August 8: All hay bales must be removed from ditches. The Ministry may remove and dispose of any remaining bales. Ministry staff may notify participants or place flags on overdue bales, allowing one week for removal if public safety is not at risk.

RM of Edenwold Municipal Hay Salvage and Ditch Mowing Schedule
- Hay located in the right-of-way area along municipal roads is available for salvage by farmers and ranchers.
- The adjacent landowner has first option on the hay. Other individuals must contact the adjacent landowner to salvage hay before July 8.
- After July 8, anyone may salvage hay without permission of the adjacent landowner, provided that the adjacent landowner has not begun salvage operations.
- The right-of-way must be left neat in appearance.
- All bales must be removed by August 15.
- Mowing may take place prior to July 8 in certain areas. All landowners who wish to salvage hay should apply with the form below to RM office to ensure that the RM does not cut their ditches before they have had an opportunity to salvage it.
- Any adjacent landowner may be permitted to mow the ditch right-of-way adjacent to his land during the season, however he must obtain approval first by the Manager of Public Works to ensure that the roadway has not been dedicated for hay salvage.
- If the Manager of Public Works grants approval to cut or mow, the work must be done in the direction of traffic, not against it. Tractors must have amber flashing lights and a rotating beacon on at all times.
