Voting Information

Most voters qualify simply by being residents of the RM.

To vote in a municipal election, you must:

• be at least 18 years of age on election day;
• be a Canadian citizen; and
• qualify under at least one of the voter categories listed below

  Important: You only need to meet one of the voter qualification categories below. You do not need to qualify under all categories.

Most Common Qualification

You are eligible to vote if you:

• have resided in the rural municipality for at least three consecutive months immediately preceding election day.

Other Ways to Qualify

You are also eligible to vote if you:

• are the registered owner, or purchaser under a bona fide agreement for sale, of land in the rural municipality;
• are assessed with respect to land in the rural municipality under a lease, licence, permit, or contract with the registered owner;
• are assessed with respect to an improvement in the rural municipality;
• hold a permit with respect to a trailer or mobile home in the rural municipality; or
• are the spouse of a person described above, or the chief executive officer of a duly incorporated co-operative, corporation, or religious association that is assessed on the last revised assessment roll for taxable property within the rural municipality.

Councillors are elected by voters who are eligible to vote in the division they represent. Your division number can be found in the lower-right corner of your RM property tax notice.

Voters must provide identification showing their name and address before receiving a ballot.

Preferred Identification

Bringing government-issued photo identification is the easiest way to verify your eligibility. Acceptable forms include:

• a valid Saskatchewan Driver's License;
• a valid Saskatchewan Identification Card issued by SGI or a motor license issuer; or
• any other valid photo identification issued by a Canadian federal, provincial, or municipal government, or one of its agencies, provided it contains both your name and current address.

Note: A Canadian passport does not contain an address and therefore cannot be used on its own. However, it may be used together with another document that includes your name and address.

If you do not have photo identification, you may provide two pieces of identification, provided:

• both documents contain your name; and
• at least one document contains your current address.

Examples include:

• identification cards or certificates issued by the Government of Canada, the Government of Saskatchewan, a Saskatchewan municipality or school division, a Saskatchewan Indian band, the Métis Nation-Saskatchewan, or an agency of one of these entities;
• correspondence, benefit statements, contribution statements, or tax and assessment notices issued by one of the above entities;
• bank or credit union cards, credit cards, and account statements;
• utility bills or statements issued within six months of election day; and
• a personalized attestation of residence, letter of stay, or admission form issued by a seniors' residence, student residence, long-term care facility, or shelter.

A voter who does not have acceptable identification may be vouched for by another voter who:

• has acceptable identification;
• is entitled to vote at the same polling place; and
• completes the required vouching form provided by an election official.

Please note:

• a voter may vouch for only one person;
• an exception is made for immediate family members residing at the same address;
• a voter who has been vouched for cannot vouch for another voter; and
• election officials, candidates, and candidate agents are not permitted to vouch for voters.
