White Butte Trails Prescribed Burn: November 6th
On Friday, November 6, 2026, the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport is
planning to conduct a prescribed burn at the White Butte Trails Recreational
Site to assist with the management of plains bison, reduce excessive fuel
build-up, and help to maintain healthy and diverse park grassland.
Over the last 20 years, prescribed fire has been successfully used in many
provincial parks to promote ecosystem health, combat invasive species, improve wildlife
habitat, and may play a role in reducing the abundance of ticks. Excessive
build-up of dead plant litter leads to a higher risk of uncontrolled wildfires.
The trail will be closed during this time and is located in the northwest
portion of the park - Section 26 Township 17 Range 18 West of 2nd Meridian. The
latitude and longitude for burn unit is 50°27’46” N and 104°22’44” W.
After a fire, the vegetation of a burned-over area quickly regenerates; fire does
not harm ecosystems but contributes to long-term ecosystem health and
sustainability.
